A New Era for British Banknotes: Public Invited to Shape the Future of Currency

🏛️ A New Era for British Banknotes: Public Invited to Shape the Future of Currency

The Bank of England is turning the page on a new chapter in currency history—and this time, the public gets a say. In a rare and exciting move, the Bank has launched a nationwide consultation to determine the theme of its next series of banknotes, inviting collectors, historians, and everyday citizens to help shape the visual identity of the UK’s money.

🔍 What’s Changing?

Since 1970, British banknotes have featured iconic historical figures—from William Shakespeare to Alan Turing—alongside the reigning monarch. But with the transition to King Charles III’s portrait now underway, the Bank is reimagining how to represent the UK’s rich heritage and future on its currency.

The upcoming “H” series of notes will still feature the monarch, but the surrounding themes are up for public debate. The six proposed themes are:

🏰 Architecture & Landmarks

🎨 Arts, Culture & Sport

🌿 Nature

💡 Innovation

📜 Noteworthy Events in History

👤 Notable Historical Figures

And if none of those strike the right chord? You can suggest your own theme by 31 July 2025 via the Bank of England’s portal. Bank of England launches consultation on future banknote designs | Bank of England

🧾 Why It Matters to Collectors

Banknotes are more than just a means of payment—they’re cultural artifacts. Each design reflects a moment in time, a national value, or a celebrated figure. For collectors, this consultation marks a pivotal moment: the chance to influence which stories and symbols will be immortalized in polymer for years to come.

Whether you're drawn to the elegance of Jane Austen’s £10 note or the scientific legacy of Alan Turing’s £50, this is your opportunity to advocate for the people, places, and ideas you believe deserve a place in the UK’s monetary legacy.

🛍️ What This Means for Our Shop

As a shop that celebrates the artistry and history of global banknotes, we’re thrilled by this development. It’s a reminder of why we collect: to preserve stories, honor heritage, and marvel at the design and symbolism embedded in every note.

Stay tuned—we’ll be watching closely as the consultation unfolds and will be among the first to feature the new series once released. In the meantime, explore our curated collection of historic British banknotes and discover the stories behind the faces that have shaped the UK’s currency.
