🕰️ A Brief History of Finnish Currency:

Russian Grand Duchy Era (1812–1917): During this period, Finland issued its first local banknotes under Russian authority, denominated in roubles and kopeks. These early issues laid the foundation for a distinct Finnish monetary identity.

Birth of the Markka (1860): Finland introduced its own currency—the markka (FIM)—while still under Russian rule. After gaining independence in 1917, the markka became a proud symbol of national sovereignty.

Post-Independence Designs (1917–1963): Early Finnish banknotes featured national heroes, rural life, and romantic landscapes, reflecting the country’s cultural pride and democratic ideals.

Currency Reform (1963): A revaluation introduced the “new markka”, simplifying denominations and modernizing the currency system.

Euro Adoption (2002): Finland joined the Eurozone, replacing the markka with the euro (EUR) at a fixed rate. The last markka notes were withdrawn from circulation on 28 February 2002.
