Description

1942 Philippines 50 Centavos Banknote – Japanese Invasion Money (Pick# 105x)

Historical Context

During World War II, Japan occupied the Philippines from 1942 to 1945 and introduced a series of banknotes known as Japanese Invasion Money (JIM). These notes were intended to replace the existing Philippine peso and were issued in denominations ranging from centavos to pesos. The 50 Centavos note (Pick# 105x) was part of the first issue in 1942 and circulated widely during the early years of occupation.

The Japanese government printed these notes in large quantities, often with minimal security features, leading to rampant inflation and widespread counterfeiting. By 1945, the currency had become virtually worthless, and many Filipinos resorted to barter or guerrilla-issued emergency notes.

Design Features

Obverse: Features the inscription “THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT” and “FIFTY CENTAVOS” in bold Latin script, with Japanese Katakana characters translating to “Imperial Japanese Government.” A plantation scene appears on the right side.

Reverse: Displays the denomination “50” in large numerals on both sides, with no additional imagery.

Color Scheme: Black ink over a light purple underprint.
