United States 1 Dollar Federal Reserve Note – George Washington & Green Seal (2021 Series)
Pick# 471 | Numista# 205 | Series 2021
The 2021 $1 Federal Reserve Note marks a historic milestone in U.S. currency: it is the first note to feature the signatures of two women—Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Treasurer Lynn Malerba. Yellen is the first woman to serve as Treasury Secretary, while Malerba is the first Native American to hold the office of U.S. Treasurer.
Printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing beginning in late 2022, these notes were initially issued for the Boston, New York, Cleveland, Chicago, and San Francisco Federal Reserve districts. Though visually consistent with prior series, the 2021 note carries symbolic weight and collector interest due to its groundbreaking signatories and transitional timing.
Design Highlights
Obverse: Portrait of George Washington based on Gilbert Stuart’s painting. Includes green Treasury seal, serial numbers, and the signatures of Janet Yellen and Lynn Malerba. The layout retains the classic scrollwork and Federal Reserve Bank identifier.
Reverse: Features the Great Seal of the United States—the Eye of Providence atop the pyramid on the left, and the bald eagle with shield on the right. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is prominently displayed.
Color Scheme: Traditional green and black ink on off-white cotton-linen paper, preserving the timeless aesthetic of U.S. banknotes.
